Mossel Bay’s Oystercatcher Trail - a 3- or 5-night ramble with accommodation in guest houses along the largely undisturbed coastline west of the town - has been named one of the world’s best walking trails by authors Steve Watkins and Clare Jones.

For their book, ‘Unforgettable Walks To Take Before You Die,’ Mr. Watkins and Ms. Jones drew on their extensive experience to chose thirty of the world’s most inspiring and beautiful trails. The only limiting criteria they set for themselves was that it should be possible to complete each walk within the period of a two week breakaway from their home base in Britain.

Walks in North and South American, European, Australasian and Eastern countries all feature in the book. The Oystercatcher Trail was one of only two South African products (the other was Cape Nature’s Tierkloof Trail in the Gamkaberg Reserve) selected for inclusion - and, with the ascent of Kilimanjaro and a visit to the Dogon Tribes in Mali, one of a total of four products on the African continent. They joined such prestigious icons as Peru’s Inca Trail, China’s Giant Panda Walk, India’s Darjeeling Tea Trek and Scotland’s West Highland Way.

Both leisurely walks (like a stroll around the picturesque canals of Amsterdam) and demanding hikes (like the Alpine Tour du Mont Blanc) have been included.
